Musings on the story of Earth, life, mind and spirit. Exploring the creative impulse of the cosmos through evolution. Music: Shpongle At the heart of evolution is the story of an awakening universe, matter awakening to Spirit, Godhead, Omega Point, or “Life.” Being and becoming. In that sense, the story of the evolution of consciousness is a way for a greater “Being” to begin to shine through. A few interesting connections…. Process philosophy, as well as in Teilhard’s philosophy, the heart of all matter is Spirit, or God. Divine consciousness within all “form.” The universe, then, is always and already and expression of the Whole. Formless manifests form and awakens to itself. Evolution is a process of “sublimating,” the world in the divine, two as one. Being and becoming, flux and direction. Ever more penetrating and awakening… In that sense, consciousness is not your brain. It is infinitely more, the “ever present origin.” Matter, life, the nervous system, the brain, mind itself are “conduits,” for a gradual awakening in the material world. Humans are significant here, because we are, at least on this world, one of the first “forms” to begin to recognize the inner Wholeness to reality. For more reading and information, check out Teilhard de Chardin’s work, Gaia Hypothesis, Ken Wilber, Sri Aurobindo, Jean Gebser, Whitehead, and many others (if you have a suggestion, please leave it in comments or PM me for further addition!) press.princeton.edu Will we extend life into space before a catastrophe stops us permanently? Those going into space will be impelled by an exploratory urge. But their choices will have epochal consequences. Once the threshold is crossed when there is a self-sustaining level of life in space, then lifes long-range future will be secure irrespective of any of the risks on Earth (with the single exception of the catastrophic destruction of space itself). Will this happen before our technical civilisation disintegrates, leaving this as a might-have-been? Will the self-sustaining space communities be established before a catastrophe sets back the prospect of any such enterprise, perhaps foreclosing it for ever? We live at what could be a defining moment for the cosmos, not just for our Earth. The colonization of space is an evolutionary step similar to the colonization of land This would be as epochal an evolutionary transition as that which led to land-based life on Earth. But it could still be just the beginning of cosmic evolution. The enormous potential of future life is dependent on our actions today The first aquatic creatures crawled onto dry land in the Silurian era, more than three hundred million years ago. They may have been unprepossessing brutes, but had they been clobbered, the evolution of land-based fauna would have been jeopardised. Likewise, the post-human potential is so immense that not even the most misanthropic amongst us would countenance its being

www.myspace.com When Galileo published his book debating the Copernican and Ptolemaic systems, the Church found him guilty of heresy and sentenced him to house arrest for the rest of his life. Today, Galileo is recognized for his revolutionary work in both astronomy and physics, and has been referred to as “the father of modern science.” In addition to his findings in support of the Copernican system, his theories regarding falling objects and objects in motion laid the groundwork for classical mechanics. He was also a pioneer in the approach we call the scientific method, which utilizes observation and experiment. In 1992, three hundred and fifty years after his death, the Church officially apologized for condemning Galileo and his scientific research.

Life Beyond Earth: Origin And Evolution Of Life In The Universe – Best Of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos (Part 20). Carl Edward Sagan, Ph.D. (1934-1996) was an American astronomer, astrochemist, author, and highly successful popularizer of astronomy, astrophysics and other natural sciences. He pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He is world-famous for writing popular science books and for co-writing and presenting the award-winning 1980 television series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage”, which has been seen by more than 600 million people in over 60 countries, making it the most widely watched PBS program in history. A book to accompany the program was also published. He also wrote the novel “Contact”, the basis for the 1997 Robert Zemecki’s film of the same name starring Jodie Foster. During his lifetime, Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and popular articles and was author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books. In his works, he frequently advocated sceptical inquiry, secular humanism, and the scientific method. • www.carlsagan.com ‘Our Place in the Cosmos’ (ft. November 19th, 2009 “The Lorne Trottier Annual Science Symposium – Preventing Dangerous Climate Change: Geo-Engineering or Mitigation? Some scientists argue mitigation alone can no longer prevent dangerous levels of CO2. Can we successfully manipulate the climate system to avoid dangerous climate change? Do we understand the global climate system well enough to determine the feasibility and risks involved? Panel speakers included: Professor Alan Robock Dept of Environmental Sciences, Rutgers University, NJ Professor James Fleming Technology and Society, Colby College ME Professor David Keith Director, ISEEE and Environmental Systems Group, Earth Sciences, University of Calgary Dr. Phil Rasch Pacific Northwest National Laboratory WA Following the debate, audience members will be invited to participate in a question period.” – mcgill Program Keith spoke about using aerosols to deflect the rays of the sun although it wouldnt help with our current CO2 levels. According to him the aerosols would form marine stratocumulus clouds. He used a lot of emotive language in describing the perils to come with climate change and how it is our fault. Flemming spoke about cloud seeding in Vietnam and Cuba yet continually emphasized how geo-engineering does not exist. Robock spoke of all the different reasons geo-engineering might be bad including how it may do nothing at all. He did not address any health-related concerns. “The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly
