Someone please help me with this question:

1. If the growth rate for the mauna Loa volcano averaged 0.03km^3/yr and the base of this cone shaped volcano is approximately 100km in diameter, how long did it take for this volcano to become its current height above the sea floor?

2. A recent NASA probe was sent to explore the far reaches of the solar system. Due to a malfunction, the probe crashed. Wishing to retrieve important data, NASA has contacted you to determine the location of the probe. Unfortunately, NASA’s computer system is down and the only information provided to you is that the surface area of a tennis ball is can be used to determine the dimensions of the planet or moon. The scale factor is 1cm2 on the tennis ball is equal to 573,100 km2 on the planet or moon. You know for certain that the probe is on an actual body (planet, or moon of one of the planets) in our solar system.

a)Your mission is to determine the body on which the probe crashed.

Is global warming due to the activities of humans, or is it a normal cycle of the earth and our solar system?

I think Al Gore wrote the book Inconvenient Truth a little early in the game. All the information is not in yet, so I am wondering what everyone else thinks, or has studied, about this subject. Some say there is a giant planet heading toward us that will affect our poles, weather, etc. It is called Nibiru, and could be the Sumerian’s ‘Planet X’.
There is little info at NASA about Nibiru.

http://impact.arc.nasa.gov/news_detail.cfm?ID=125

Other sites for information that is not official:

Meanwhile, back on Earth-

According to NASA, it has been known that these climate changes would occur in this time frame.

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/10mar_stormwarning.htm

‘Near Real Time’ data is being observed and recorded to back up their scientific queries.

http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/realtime-update.html#top

Our new global warming theory seems wrong. What do you think?
Please READ or at least LOOK at the NASA links on the sun’s cycles. Don’t assume that this is a question about Planet X, or Al Gore’s book. It is not.
NASA’s research has to do with sunspots that are coming in the future, please read their information. I am not saying Nibiru is coming, my opinion is that humans are not responsible for any of the cycle that is occuring, it is totally natural and has happened many times before, noted in history. NASA’s opinion seems to be that these sunspots are going to cause drastic warming in the very near future and they are photographing them. Whether the Mayans or anyone else predicted it, thinks Nibiru is coming, or it is caused by cigarette smoke, what I am looking at seems to be concrete evidence from NASA that it is sunspots and there is nothing we did or can do about it. Please read links.
dana noted this:
"March 10, 2006: It’s official: Solar minimum has arrived. Sunspots have all but vanished. Solar flares are nonexistent. The sun is utterly quiet."

But what it says after that is this is the calm before the storm.
RR-Thanks for great info. The AAPG (from your link) says in a new statement: "The new statement,[8] adopted July 2007, states that "Certain climate simulation models predict that the warming trend will continue, as reported through NAS, AGU, AAAS, and AMS. AAPG respects these scientific opinions but wants to add that the current climate warming projections could fall within well-documented natural variations in past climate and observed temperature data. These data do not necessarily support the maximum case scenarios forecast in some models."

The Kepler telescope launched aboard a Delta II rocket on March 7th, 2009 at 3:49am UTC. The Kepler Mission will use a space photometer developed by NASA to search for Earth-like planets orbiting other stars. It will observe the brightness of over 100000 stars over 3.5 years to detect periodic transits of a star by its planets (the transit method). The mission is named in honor of Johannes Kepler. Kepler is a mission under NASA’s Discovery Program of low-cost, focused science missions. NASA’s Ames Research Center is the home organization of the science principal investigator and is responsible for the ground system development, mission operations and science data analysis. Kepler mission development is managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. is responsible for developing the Kepler flight system.

The Rosetta Spacecraft – Mission to Catch a Comet! Comets have inspired awe and wonder since the dawn of history. Many scientists today believe that comets crashed into Earth in its formative period spewing organic molecules that were crucial to the growth of life. Comets may have formed about the same time as the giant planets of our solar system (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) – about 4.6 billion years ago. Some scientists think that comets and planets were both made from the same clumps of dust and ice that spewed from our Suns birth; others think that these roving time capsules are even older than that, and that they may contain grains of interstellar stuff that is even older than our solar system! — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — Attempting New Firsts in Space Rosetta is a spacecraft on a ten-year mission to catch the comet “67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko” (CG) and answer some of our questions about comets. Rosetta will be the first spacecraft to soft-land a robot on a comet! Rosetta will also be the first spacecraft to accompany a comet as it enters our inner solar system, observing at close range how the comet changes as the Suns heat transforms it into the luminous apparition that has frightened and inspired people for centuries. Earth Rotation & revolution around the sun which in turn moving around the galaxy. Rotation period: Earth’s rotation period relative to the Sun (its mean solar day) is 86400 seconds of mean solar time. Each of these seconds is slightly longer than an SI second because Earth’s solar day is now slightly longer than it was during the 19th century due to tidal acceleration. The mean solar second between 1750 and 1892 was chosen in 1895 by Simon Newcomb as the independent unit of time in his Tables of the Sun. These tables were used to calculate the world’s ephemerides between 1900 and 1983, so this second became known as the ephemeris second. The SI second was made equal to the ephemeris second in 1967 Earth’s rotation period relative to the fixed stars, called its stellar day by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), is 86164.098 903 691 seconds of mean solar time (UT1) (23h 56m 4.098 903 691s Earth’s rotation period relative to the precessing or moving mean vernal equinox, misnamed its sidereal day is 86164.090 530 832 88 seconds of mean solar time (UT1) (23h 56m 4.090 530 832 88s). Thus the sidereal day is shorter than the stellar day by about 8.4 ms. The length of the mean solar day in SI seconds is available from the IERS for the periods 1623 – 2005 and 1962 – 2005. Recently (1999 – 2005) the average annual length of the mean solar day in excess of 86400 SI seconds has varied between 0.3 ms and 1 ms, which must be added to both the stellar

Do NASA have evidence of a massive twin dwarf Sun, a Planet “X”, Nibiru or Nemesis hidden somewhere in our solar system? Images from NASA Stereo Science Center (SSC) shows undoubtedly a large object with sun-like flares on top of it dead on! This is not amateur astronomy, this is NASA – I don´t know what it is, but there is certainly something in these images. NASA Stereo Science Center consists of two space-based solar and solar flare observatories, one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other trailing behind. It gives scientists a 3D view of the structure of our Sun and a look into the evolution of solar storms as they blast from the Sun out through space. cryosat-2 – esa’s ice mission esa’s Earth Explorer cryosat mission is dedicated to precise monitoring of the changes in the thickness of marine ice floating in the polar oceans and variations in the thickness of the vast ice sheets that overlie Greenland and Antarctica. — Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com — With the effects of a changing climate fast becoming apparent, particularly in the polar regions, it is increasingly important to understand exactly how Earths ice fields are responding. Diminishing ice cover is frequently cited as an early casualty of global warming and since ice, in turn, plays an important role regulating climate and sea level, the consequences of change are far reaching. For some years now, satellites such as esas Envisat have been mapping the extent of ice cover. As stated in the Climate Change 2007 Synthesis Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, “Satellite data since 1978 show that annual average Arctic sea-ice extent has shrunk by 2.7% per decade.” However, this is only part of the picture. In order to understand fully how climate change is affecting these remote but sensitive regions, there remains an urgent need to determine exactly how the thickness of the ice, both on land and floating in the sea, is changing. By addressing this challenge, the data delivered by the cryosat mission will complete the picture and lead to a better understanding of the role ice plays
