I learned here that the standard theory of ice ages is: Sun gets to maximum distance from earth > slight reduction in earth’s temperature > CO2 absorbed > further slight reduction in temperature > more CO2 absorbed > etc.. Opposite positive feedback when sun gets closer.
But why might Gaia set up, as it were, this situation. What, as it were, is in it for Gaia. Any ideas?
Thanks for the interesting answer. Since you bring up: ‘It suggests that salts in the ocean are regulated by life. How? ‘ This is one of my favourite bits so:
Coral island. Makes a ring of coral. Sea water inside the ring evaporates, leaving rock salt. Re floods. Process repeats …..
Lovelock may have distanced himself from this argument. It strikes me as particularly pretty.
Edit: The constancy of the salinity of the sea over opocks seems a bit ‘designed’. I assume rock salt deposits are where the excess salt has been put(?) It must be fairly simple to come up with a mechanism consistant with Gaia consistent with their geological context. Easier to believe Gaia if you imagine yourself the size of the moon.

Help I really need to know this for my science project! I’m doing a presentation about the solar system.
Oh are you serious? Wow I always thought the sun went around the Earth.
Looks like I would have failed my project lol haha.
Ok then how many times does the Earth revolve around the Sun in one month?
Science homework help please? *Solar System*?

Now I understand that you all may not be able to answer all of these questions, so whoever answers the most gets best answer.
1. ____, a moon of Saturn, is the only known moon to have an atmosphere.
2. Besides Earth, only ____, a moom of Jupiter, is geologically active with many volcanoes.
3. ____ and _____ both rotate retrograde, or opposite of other planets.
4. ______’s orbit is so eccentric that at perihelion it is closer to the Sun than Neptune.
5. The Gas Giants are composed mainly of which two types of gas?
6. 5 billion years ago, a huge cloud (nebula) of ____ and ____ was drifting through space.
7. _____ theory states that our solar system was formed from this nebula.
8. Objects that are formed in the Solar System are ____,_____, and ____
Sorry typo on #2, I meant moon.
Haha actually guys, I’m having trouble finding the answers in my book.

1. Describe the Sun-centered model of the solar system. What holds the solar system together?
2. explain how the planets in the solar system formed.
3. infer why life is unlikely on the outer planets in spite of the presence of water, methane, and ammonia — materials needed for life to develop.
4. List two reasons why the outer planets take longer to orbit the sun than the inner planets do.
5. Think Critically– Would a year on the planet neptune be longer or shorter than an earth year? explain.
I will pick a best answer!

I know Scientist know this already but what about this scenario.
A sun thats 1/4 bigger than are current sun would this enable a earth like planet to exist and be 1/4 bigger than our current earths mass? If space has a whole new set of laws in terms of physics what do we know of ideal conditions that allow uor planet to be what it is water etc.. Maybe another sun thats 1/2 times bigger wouldnt have the same heat or radioactive ouput as our sun?
Is it possible that their are mini planets with a tempature of 65 deg average like ours or vice versa giant earths with a very comfterable average temp? When it comes to science its pretty precise 30 deg and it can snow so what do we know of other solar systems and their suns because that seems to be the key in terms of the size of a planet that may be like ours.
My question in whole is this does the suns size and tempature output related to possible habitabal planets that are like Earth. Also does the sun size and output negate planets size. For example smaller suns smaller earths bigger suns bigger earth just father away to compensate vice versa for the smalller sun or weaker star in terms of heat or energy output cause maybe in space size doesnt matter! I the laws of physics on space is something we have no idea about yet.
