Everyone who purchases one of these original prints will also be listed in the film, ‘A Hitchhiker’s Guide To Gaia‘ credits as an associate producer.
Hambling, awarded the CBE in 2010 New Years Honours list, is well known for controversial public sculptures in memory of Oscar Wilde, in central London, and of Benjamin Britten, entitled ‘Scallop’, on the Aldeburgh beach, Suffolk. Her work is also in major museum collections in the UK and abroad.

Having been moved by a photograph in the press of a Scalloped Hammerhead Shark wounded by fishermen. Hambling painted her response: an image of profound intensity, beauty and sadness. The work is titled, ‘Young Scalloped hammerhead, Wounded’ and depicts the creature with traces of blood languishing beneath a breaking wave.
The painting has been carefully reproduced exactly as a giclee print in a limited edition of 250, signed and numbered. The proceeds from the sales will go towards completing the documentary about equally controversial scientist, 91 year old, Professor James Lovelock, creator of the now accepted Gaia Theory.
The film crew led by director Andy Worboys has already spent three days filming with Lovelock, exploring his ideas and looking at the reality of the effects of global heating and its’ impact on humans and all other species. The film will be a fresh and optimistic look at what needs to be done to ensure our survival, and also why it is important that we even try to survive. The film will take the viewer to the cutting edge of science where technologies, that could one day be the key to our survival, are being developed.
For more information on supporting this project by purchasing a Hambling print, please visit www.arts.co.uk. More information about the film can be viewed from here as well.
A giclee print is made with especially light fast inks which achieve all the richness of colour and detail in the original painting.

www.bbc.co.uk More about this episode: www.bbc.co.uk Great minds don’t think alike. In fact, offbeat thinking has led to some of the greatest scientific discoveries of our age. In the second of a three-part series uncovering the minds behind some of the greatest scientific discoveries of our age, James Lovelock explains how his maverick way of thinking led him not only to technical breakthroughs in atmospheric detection systems on Earth and Mars, but also to Gaia Theory – a new way of thinking about the Earth as a holistic, self-regulating system. He tells of his struggle against the scientific consensus of the day, the ridicule of his peers and his passionate belief that the mainstream scientific establishment stifles intellectual creativity.

I have a feeling that even if God was dethroned by science, humans would inevitably seek something else like God to cling onto in order to fulfil a need for a spiritual grounding. I have three alternatives, none of which are meant to taken as gods that you worship since they don’t ask for worship anyway. None of these suggestions are faith-based
1. My personal belief that Mankind is already the gods. This is to say that Mankind is so sentient that there is an innate godlike potential. Three words: mind, willpower and action. If you take the ancient astronaut theory into account, technically I’m right. Other than that, I don’t need to tell you much else about seeing as I’ve talked a lot about it before. However this concept also focuses on the self-empowerment of Man.
2. The planet, or life-bearing planets, as god-like entities. Much like the Gaia hypothesis proposed by James Lovelock, life-bearing planets are technically gods, earth mothers or genderless entities that act automatically in support of itself, and consequentially any life on said planet. This involves balancing things out on a planet.
3. Existence as an omnipresent entity. Christians say God is eternal. Aristotle said the cosmos is eternal. Nothing really lasts forever, except existence. Existence is before and after the moment our universe got created. Existence is good and it is bad. It’s live life to the full as well as pick your poison. The Hindus believe in something like God called Brahman, which is basically an omnipresent spiritual entity. Based on both logics, maybe existence itself is a god-like presence that does not save nor condemn, intervenes nor stands back and does not require worship.
If you have other suggestions please do not hesitate to speak out.
@Screenager So are you saying that religion comes from a desire for hope and escape, but at the same time it’s the result of human arrogance?
