Everyone who purchases one of these original prints will also be listed in the film, ‘A Hitchhiker’s Guide To Gaia‘ credits as an associate producer.
Hambling, awarded the CBE in 2010 New Years Honours list, is well known for controversial public sculptures in memory of Oscar Wilde, in central London, and of Benjamin Britten, entitled ‘Scallop’, on the Aldeburgh beach, Suffolk. Her work is also in major museum collections in the UK and abroad.

Having been moved by a photograph in the press of a Scalloped Hammerhead Shark wounded by fishermen. Hambling painted her response: an image of profound intensity, beauty and sadness. The work is titled, ‘Young Scalloped hammerhead, Wounded’ and depicts the creature with traces of blood languishing beneath a breaking wave.
The painting has been carefully reproduced exactly as a giclee print in a limited edition of 250, signed and numbered. The proceeds from the sales will go towards completing the documentary about equally controversial scientist, 91 year old, Professor James Lovelock, creator of the now accepted Gaia Theory.
The film crew led by director Andy Worboys has already spent three days filming with Lovelock, exploring his ideas and looking at the reality of the effects of global heating and its’ impact on humans and all other species. The film will be a fresh and optimistic look at what needs to be done to ensure our survival, and also why it is important that we even try to survive. The film will take the viewer to the cutting edge of science where technologies, that could one day be the key to our survival, are being developed.
For more information on supporting this project by purchasing a Hambling print, please visit www.arts.co.uk. More information about the film can be viewed from here as well.
A giclee print is made with especially light fast inks which achieve all the richness of colour and detail in the original painting.

Corporate Knights presents Dr. James Lovelock, originator of The Gaia Hypothesis (also known as Gaia Theory), discussing the need for human adaptation and survival in a coming era of massive environmental change due to global heating. Dr. Lovelock lectures on his latest book, “The Vanishing Face of Gaia“. Stay tuned to www.corporateknights.ca for more videos. Videography & Editing by Jon-Erik Lappano, Editorial Assistant.

I learned here that the standard theory of ice ages is: Sun gets to maximum distance from earth > slight reduction in earth’s temperature > CO2 absorbed > further slight reduction in temperature > more CO2 absorbed > etc.. Opposite positive feedback when sun gets closer.
But why might Gaia set up, as it were, this situation. What, as it were, is in it for Gaia. Any ideas?
Thanks for the interesting answer. Since you bring up: ‘It suggests that salts in the ocean are regulated by life. How? ‘ This is one of my favourite bits so:
Coral island. Makes a ring of coral. Sea water inside the ring evaporates, leaving rock salt. Re floods. Process repeats …..
Lovelock may have distanced himself from this argument. It strikes me as particularly pretty.
Edit: The constancy of the salinity of the sea over opocks seems a bit ‘designed’. I assume rock salt deposits are where the excess salt has been put(?) It must be fairly simple to come up with a mechanism consistant with Gaia consistent with their geological context. Easier to believe Gaia if you imagine yourself the size of the moon.
which religions/philosophises incorporate something like Gaia theory?

Musings on the story of Earth, life, mind and spirit. Exploring the creative impulse of the cosmos through evolution. Music: Shpongle At the heart of evolution is the story of an awakening universe, matter awakening to Spirit, Godhead, Omega Point, or “Life.” Being and becoming. In that sense, the story of the evolution of consciousness is a way for a greater “Being” to begin to shine through. A few interesting connections…. Process philosophy, as well as in Teilhard’s philosophy, the heart of all matter is Spirit, or God. Divine consciousness within all “form.” The universe, then, is always and already and expression of the Whole. Formless manifests form and awakens to itself. Evolution is a process of “sublimating,” the world in the divine, two as one. Being and becoming, flux and direction. Ever more penetrating and awakening… In that sense, consciousness is not your brain. It is infinitely more, the “ever present origin.” Matter, life, the nervous system, the brain, mind itself are “conduits,” for a gradual awakening in the material world. Humans are significant here, because we are, at least on this world, one of the first “forms” to begin to recognize the inner Wholeness to reality. For more reading and information, check out Teilhard de Chardin’s work, Gaia Hypothesis, Ken Wilber, Sri Aurobindo, Jean Gebser, Whitehead, and many others (if you have a suggestion, please leave it in comments or PM me for further addition!) James Lovelock is the author of approximately 200 scientific papers, distributed almost equally among topics in Medicine, Biology, Instrument Science and Geophysiology. He has filed more than 50 patents, mostly for detectors for use in chemical analysis. One of these, the electron capture detector, was important in the development of environmental awareness. It revealed for the first time the ubiquitous distribution of pesticide residues and other halogen bearing chemicals. This information enabled Rachel Carson to write her book, Silent Spring, often said to have initiated the awareness of environmental disturbance. Later it enabled the discovery of the presence of PCB’s in the natural environment. More recently the electron capture detector was responsible for the discovery of the global distribution of nitrous oxide and of the chlorofluorocarbons, both of which are important in the stratospheric chemistry of ozone. Some of his inventions were adopted by NASA in their programme of planetary exploration. He was awarded by NASA three certificates of recognition for these. He is the originator of the Gaia Hypothesis (now Gaia Theory) and has written four books on the subject: Gaia: a new look at life on Earth, (Oxford University Press, 1979); The Ages of Gaia, (WW Norton, 1988); Gaia: the practical science of planetary medicine, (Gaia Books, 1991), and Homage to Gaia (2000).
